Maryellen's Collection... For Less!

American Girl has not yet released the new 1950's historical, "Maryellen" but she is on the way. To jump start your collection before her arrival, you can buy similar items from different brands for less.

Our Generation Jenny Doll
Price: $19.99
Link to Website
Jenny has a striking resemblance to Maryellen. Both have hazel eyes, and strawberry blonde hair. The only difference is that Jenny is way cheaper, and comes with some fun baking accessories.

Our Generation Retro Diner
Price: $109.99
Link to Website
This diner is oh so adorable! With a jukebox, and tons of food this set is unbeatable! I own the diner and love it so much! OG put a ton of detail into making this set accurate. Get this set for cheaper since AG has already trademarked, "Seaside Diner."

Our Generation Bop Til You Drop Outfit
Price: $12.99
Link to Website
Poodle Skirts are very symbolic of the 1950's. Girls would wear their full circle skirts to the sock hop, or even to school. I actually own this set, and love the scarf, saddle shoes, and skirt.

Our Generation Two-riffic Twins Set
Price: $16.99
Link to Website
This set looks like something Sandy would wear in the movie, "Grease." The violet color is so darling, and the peter pan collar is very 50's. Not to mention this set is great to mix and match!

Our Generation L'il Miss Dah-ling Set
Price: $16.99
Link to Website
I have this set, and am in love with the shoes! This set is so adorable on dolls, since everything matches very nicely. The dress is so summery and fun, and reminds me of a picnic blanket. Oh and the cat eye glasses and scarf! I give this set two thumbs up!

Our Generation Roller Skater Outfit
Price: $12.99
Link to Website
The roller skates are so perfect! The colors in the set are so adorable, and would look cute on Maryellen! Especially the lace apron, and red ribbon go together well.

Our Generation Deluxe Purple Floral Dress
Price: $16.99

I have been in love with this set for so long. I mean, it is so perfect for the 50's. The gloves, Mary Janes, and the bag. Maryellen would look fairest of them all in this dress!

Our Generation Deluxe Blue Lace Dress
Price: $16.99

The lace is so enchanting in this set, and makes this dress perfect for a tea party. I overall, just love the colors in this set and think that is an ultra girly yet classy dress. Perfect for Audrey Hepburn.

Our Generation Deluxe Polka Dot Dress
Price: $16.99

Polka dots were such a trend in the 50's, and pairing them with a fur sole makes this set undeniably beautiful. Plus the pearl necklace adds such elegance to the dress, without going overboard.

Our Generation Deluxe Gotta Bowl Set
Price: $16.99
Link to Website
Bowling was very popular in the 1950's so this outfit is a necessity for your Maryellen doll to have. I mean, how cute is that Letterman jacket!

Our Generation A Real Cool Cat Set
Price: $12.99

The sneakers in this set are so cute, and add a pop of color to this realistic set. I even love how the jeans are rolled up! Just like how they were back then.

Our Generation Swimwear
Price: $12.99
Swimming Caps were super popular in the 1950's, along with polka dots. This set is very bright, and looks perfect for summer time. Not to mention, the sunglasses are too cute!

How to Save Up for AG items

American Girl has some adorable outfits, dolls, and accessories. Unfortunately, to get that "Caroline" doll or pajamas there is a pretty big price tag. So, to help save up for those expensive items I created a list of ways to save money.

  • Create jewelry or crafts and sell them
  • Make a lemonade stand on a warm day and sell some lemonade
  • Do chores around the house or yard
  • If you are old enough, babysit neighbors or family.
  • Have a garage sale and sell all of your old toys
  • Walk neighborhood pets or pet sit them
  • Tutor other people
  • Draw pictures and sell them
  • Possibly get money from parents for getting good grades or doing great in sports
  • Sew doll items and sell them on Etsy
Doing these things can even help convince your family to let you buy some items since you'd be responsible.
